Special Screening of the Freedom Riders Documentary
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

GAB 101 Class

The History Department would like to invite all faculty and students to a special screening of the PBS American Experience documentary Freedom Riders. Winner of three 2011 Emmy awards including Best Documentary, Freedom Riders is the powerful, harrowing, and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism. Pike County native and current United States Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga) both organized and participated in the Rides and is featured prominently in the film. The film will be shown in Patterson 101 on Wednesday, February 8, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

In honor of Women’s History Month each year, Troy University honors women who best exemplify not only being a true TROY Trojan, but also an outstanding member of society. The Student Government Association is currently accepting nominations for Troy University’s Most Outstanding Women 2012. If you know of a young woman on campus who has inspired you and serves as an exceptional role model to those around her, we encourage you to submit a nomination. Nominees should be actively involved in serving her community and her school. Any student, faculty member or employer may nominate a student for this honor. In order to do so, a one page letter of recommendation, along with the student survey, must be submitted to the SGA Office Trojan Center Room 215 by Friday February 24, 2012 no later than 4 p.m. Guidelines for the letter of recommendation and a student survey are located online via the Student Government Association webpage at troy.troy.edu/sga, located under the “Most Outstanding Women” link.
