What’s better than spending a fall Saturday playing football with friends? Doing it for a good cause. On Saturday, November 7, the Alpha Chi Rho, Phi Kappa Chi chapter (Temple University Ambler), Epsilon Phi undergraduate chapter (Main Campus), and Lambda Chi Phi chapter (Drexel University) will host Crow Bowl in memory of John Williamson and Ian Alexander, both members of the Drexel chapter. Funds raised from Crow Bowl 2009 will be used to establish scholarships in honor of the two Alpha Chi Rho brothers, who passed away in January 2009.

From Monday, November 9 through Thursday, November 12, the Ambler Accounting Professional Society/Beta Alpha Psi will be selling the tasty treats to support the Ambler Campus Turkey Drive. On November 23, a turkey donation will be given to the Mattie M. Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler Borough. Thanks to the generous donations of the Ambler campus community, hundreds of families in the community over the past six years have enjoyed a holiday meal that might have otherwise been unavailable to them.

Jennifer Lind will discuss her book, Sorry States: Apologies in International Politics (Cornell University Press, 2008), which examines the role of war memory in international reconciliation. Lind challenges the conventional wisdom by showing that many countries have been able to reconcile without much in the way of apologies or reparations. Furthermore, she shows that contrition is highly controversial and likely to cause a domestic backlash that alarms--rather than assuages--outside observers. Jennifer Lind is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government, Dartmouth College. She received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master’s in Pacific International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Lind has worked as a consultant for RAND and for the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Defense, and has lived and worked in Japan.

Brett Cook will speak about Collaborative Aesthetics. Cook creates objects, experiences, and feelings that defy classification in any single discipline. His work has been shown at museums and galleries since 1991, concurrent with a practice manifested in public projects since 1984. The public works have been executed in the United States, from California to Maine, and internationally in Brazil, Barbados, and Mexico. His public collaborations include a South Central Los Angeles project addressing divinity; the Development/Gentrification Project installed in ten locations throughout Harlem; and a project addressing segregation at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. While some of his work has been commissioned by museums or public agencies, others have been self-initiated interventions on abandoned spaces. His use of participatory ethnographic strategies, progressive educational pedagogy, and community organizing connect his work to exceptionally wide audiences.

Japanese architecture continues to be on the cutting edge with exciting innovations in design, materials and technology. In this lecture Dr. Mehta will discuss the developments in Japanese architecture since the turn of the century. Geeta Mehta is a former faculty member of TUJ, and a visiting faculty at Columbia University in New York. She is also the President of the Japan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Geeta received her graduate degree in Architecture from Columbia University and her Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. She is a practicing architect and has designed projects in Japan, India and Vietnam. Her work has included diverse projects ranging from slum improvements in Mumbai to luxury homes in Tokyo. Geeta is also a partner in URBZ (http://www.urbz.org), a think tank committed to developing on/offline tools for "User Generated Cities".

The Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University will continue the Fall 2009 "Boyer at Ambler" concert series with "Jazz It Up!" Renowned saxophonist and Boyer faculty member Dick Oatts leads a senior ensemble in selections from the jazz repertoire. Boyer's award-winning jazz studies program recently performed at the Kimmel Center with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Students have been featured in Downbeat magazine and recognized by Mellon Bank New York in support of scholarships. The jazz band, under the direction of Professor Terell Stafford, also toured Amsterdam in 2008 as part of the Hague Jazz Festival.

Lonnie Graham is internationally renowned for his photographic and activist projects. Amongst his many awards and honors, he was Pennsylvania Artist of the Year (2006) for which he received the Governor's Award from Governor Edward Rendell. He is also a Pew Fellow, and a professor of Photography at Pennsylvania State University. Graham will present selections from his decade-long series of photographs and interviews entitled, “A Conversation with the World.”
