Over the past decade, there has been a rise in public memorial ritual throughout American culture, tributes that tend to be enacted locally but expressed in terms of national ideals. It is at least partly for news media that public grief rituals are performed, and it is because of their coverage in news media that a broader public may “participate” as well. News reports on public-grief events illuminate many of the central tensions of journalism itself, blurring the lines between: hard and soft news; national and local news; the serious and the sentimental; public space and media space; and journalists and audiences. This talk surveys news coverage of recent deaths considered to be both locally and nationally meaningful.

This lecture will challenge notions of "soft power," and the ability to persuade/attract rather than to coerce and cast doubt on the assumptions underlying recent claims about Japan's "gross national cool," the "Korea wave," and China's "charm offensive." David Leheny, is the Henry Wendt III '55 Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University. He taught in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1998-2007. He has also served as Regional Affairs Officer in the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, U.S. Department of State, as well as a Research Associate in the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo. In addition to articles in English and Japanese, Leheny is the author of two books: Think Global, Fear Local: Sex, Violence, and Anxiety in Contemporary Japan (Cornell University Press, 2006) and The Rules of Play: National Identity and the Shaping of Japanese Leisure (Cornell University Press, 2003).

Temple University’s Creative Writing Program Poets & Writers Series Presents: Renowned Poet, Juliana Spahr. JULIANA SPAHR is a poet, editor, and scholar. Her most recent book is The Transformation (Atelos: 2007), a book of prose which tells the story of three people who move between Hawaii and New York in order to talk about cultural geography, ecology, anticolonialism, queer theory, language politics, the academy, and recent wars. Spahr co-edited the journal Chain with Jena Osman from 1994-2005. With nineteen other poets she has been an editor of the collectively edited and collectively funded Subpress.

"Measuring Greater Philadelphia's Greenhouse Gas Emissions" Rob Graff, Manager, Office of Energy and Climate Change Initiatives Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) Mr. Graff will present the results of DVRPC's recently released Regional Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory. This inventory details the sources of GHG emissions in the Greater Philadelphia region. He will also discuss the importance to the region for reducing these emissions, and provide an overview of major efforts in place and emerging in the region for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The seminar will leave plenty of time to raise and discuss questions about the methodology and data sources for the inventory.

On Saturday, November 7, the Alpha Chi Rho, Phi Kappa Chi chapter (Temple University Ambler), Epsilon Phi undergraduate chapter (Main Campus), and Lambda Chi Phi chapter (Drexel University) will host Crow Bowl in memory of John Williamson and Ian Alexander, both members of the Drexel chapter. Funds raised from Crow Bowl 2009 will be used to establish scholarships in honor of the two Alpha Chi Rho brothers, who passed away in January 2009.

From Monday, November 9 through Thursday, November 12, the Ambler Accounting Professional Society/Beta Alpha Psi will be selling the tasty treats to support the Ambler Campus Turkey Drive. On November 23, a turkey donation will be given to the Mattie M. Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler Borough. Thanks to the generous donations of the Ambler campus community, hundreds of families in the community over the past six years have enjoyed a holiday meal that might have otherwise been unavailable to them.

Jennifer Lind will discuss her book, Sorry States: Apologies in International Politics (Cornell University Press, 2008), which examines the role of war memory in international reconciliation. Lind challenges the conventional wisdom by showing that many countries have been able to reconcile without much in the way of apologies or reparations. Furthermore, she shows that contrition is highly controversial and likely to cause a domestic backlash that alarms--rather than assuages--outside observers. Jennifer Lind is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government, Dartmouth College. She received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master’s in Pacific International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Lind has worked as a consultant for RAND and for the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Defense, and has lived and worked in Japan.
