It is at least partly for news media that public grief rituals are performed, and it is because of their coverage in news media that a broader public may “participate” as well. News reports on public-grief events illuminate many of the central tensions of journalism itself, blurring the lines between: hard and soft news; national and local news; the serious and the sentimental; public space and media space; and journalists and audiences. This talk surveys news coverage of recent deaths considered to be both locally and nationally meaningful.

Ambler Campus: "Emerging Leaders Seminar" (11/5/2009)

Start Date:

11/5/2009

Start Time:

12:45 PM

End Date:

11/5/2009

End Time:

1:45 PM

Ambler - Bright Hall
Room: 106

Part of Temple University's Student Leadership Challenge, the Emerging Leaders Seminar provides students the opportunity to explore the five principles of leadership discussed in James M. Rob Graff, Manager, Office of Energy and Climate Change Initiatives
Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC)

Mr. Graff will present the results of DVRPC's recently released Regional Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory. This inventory details the sources of GHG emissions in the Greater Philadelphia region. He will also discuss the importance to the region for reducing these emissions, and provide an overview of major efforts in place and emerging in the region for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The seminar will leave plenty of time to raise and discuss questions about the methodology and data sources for the inventory.

Volleyball vs. La Salle (11/6/2009)

Start Date:

11/6/2009

Start Time:

12:00 PM

End Date:

11/6/2009

McGonigle Hall

Flash Fiction (11/6/2009)

Start Date:

11/6/2009

Start Time:

12:30 PM

End Date:

11/6/2009

End Time:

1:30 PM

Main Campus - Tuttleman Learning Center
Room: 201

Flash fiction - or extremely short short stories - is a great way to keep active as a creative writer when your writing time is impinged upon by other responsibilities. "Sorry States - Apologoies in International Politics" (11/9/2009)

Start Date:

11/9/2009

Start Time:

7:00 PM

End Date:

11/9/2009

Japan - Mita Hall
Room: 502

Jennifer Lind will discuss her book, Sorry States: Apologies in International Politics (Cornell University Press, 2008), which examines the role of war memory in international reconciliation.

Lind challenges the conventional wisdom by showing that many countries have been able to reconcile without much in the way of apologies or reparations. Furthermore, she shows that contrition is highly controversial and likely to cause a domestic backlash that alarms--rather than assuages--outside observers.

Jennifer Lind is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government, Dartmouth College. She received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master’s in Pacific International Affairs from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Lind has worked as a consultant for RAND and for the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Defense, and has lived and worked in Japan.

Ambler Campus: "Society for Exceptional Educators General Meeting" (11/9/2009)

Start Date:

11/9/2009

Start Time:

7:30 PM

End Date:

11/9/2009

End Time:

8:30 PM

Ambler - Bright Hall
Room: 106

Come out and learn what the Society for Exceptional Educators is all about!
