Event Description Philip Howard, associate professor of communication at the University of Washington, will give the presentation “The Digital Origins of Democracy: Information Technology and Political Islam” in the Broadcasting, Telecommunication and Mass Media class, Information Society. Globally, one in 10 Internet users is a Muslim living in a populous Muslim community, Howard says. In these countries, young people are developing their political identities, including a transnational Muslim identity, online. With evidence from Azerbaijan, Egypt, Tajikistan and Tanzania, and using the latest fuzzy-set statistical models, he says he will demonstrate that communication technology has played a crucial role in advancing democracy in Muslim countries. The talk is free and open to all members of the Temple community. |
