Event Description Join Dr. Kate Goodrich, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Widener University, as she presents “Floral Scents, Color and Architecture: A Look at the Floral Phenotypes of Pawpaws (Asimina: Annonaceae).” Flowers are the reproductive structures of angiosperms, producing both male gametophytes (pollen) and female gametophytes (ovules). Many plants must “out-cross,” meaning that pollen from one flower must be moved to the stigma (female portion) of another flower on a different plant. To achieve this goal many plants use signals such as strong odors, distinctive colors, and complex shapes (collectively, floral phenotype) to attract and behaviorally manipulate insects as pollinators. Different combinations of floral scent, color and shape can strongly influence which types of insects visit and successfully transfer pollen from one flower to another. Varied combinations of floral scent, color and shape can have tremendous impact on the reproductive ecology of co-flowering species. Dr. Goodrich will present data on the floral scent, color and morphology of pawpaws, and discuss the implication of these patterns on the reproductive ecology and speciation within the genus. This is the first in a series of special guest lectures presented during the Fall Horticulture Senior Seminar, which have been opened to all students, faculty, and staff |
