Event Description Commemorative Concert for Jazz Legend George Shearing featuring the Dave Sanders Quintet
The public is invited to a commemorative concert honoring the life and work of legendary jazz pianist George Shearing who passed away last year. Shearing burst onto the jazz scene in 1949 with the George Shearing Quintet, which quickly became known for its relaxed, sophisticated groove with a subtle pulse. The “Shearing sound” permeated popular jazz until the early 1960’s and was defined by both Shearing’s compositional style and the quintet’s unique instrumentation (piano, guitar, bass, drums, and vibraphone). While Shearing’s music was influenced by bebop, his compositions were more mellow and accessible to the public and the quintet sold nearly one million copies of their first recording.
The commemorative concert, featuring a quintet of the same instrumentation as the George Shearing Quintet, was the idea of Temple University jazz guitar performance major Dave Sanders.
“Shearing’s music is relatively unknown, even to jazz listeners”, says David Sanders. “I wanted to have this concert as a testament to his lifetime achievements, and to create an enjoyable listening experience for people who might be new to Shearing’s arrangements and compositions.”
The concert will be a multimedia experience, combining musical selections, quotes, and photographs, illustrating the important concepts that bind together Shearing's life and music.
Quintet members include Tim Brey (piano), Adam Pfannansteel (vibraphone), Justin Sekelewski (bass), Carl Moritz (drums) and Dave Sanders (guitar). Vocalist Joanna Pascale, a Temple alumni and faculty member, will join the quintet on several selections. Philadelphia Weekly described Pascale’s vocals as "stunning, sophisticated and extremely soulful." Pascale has appeared and recorded with jazz giants such as trumpeter and Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, Terell Stafford; sax pyrotechnic and critic’s rave, Tim Warfield; legendary drummer, Mickey Roker, piano virtuoso, Cyrus Chestnut and others.
The concert is funded through the Creative Arts Research and Scholarship (CARAS) Program at Temple University, and mentored by Dr. Norman David, author, composer, and Instructor for Jazz Studies at Temple University.
