“2013 AIA Philadelphia Young Architect Award Winners: Different Paths to the Future”
The two recipients of the 2013 Young Architect Award describe their unique career paths since graduating from Temple and discuss their plans for the future.
Brian Szymanik
“Make no small plans…”
Brian Szymanik is an architect and educator based in Philadelphia. He is a founding principle of MAKE., a multi-focused design studio based in Philadelphia.The studio focuses its efforts at scales large and small, from the fabrication of finely-crafted furniture and building components, to the design of buildings and urban environments. Brian is currently an Assistant Professor of Practice at the School of Architecture at Marywood University and has taught at the Tyler School of Art and Philadelphia University. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the Tyler School of Art and a Master of Architecture from the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Denise E. Thompson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
“Recent work”
Denise graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, winning the AIA Henry Adams Certificate of Merit, awarded to the second- ranking graduate of the class and the Alpha Rho Chi Bronze Medal for Leadership.
Prior to graduation and immediately following, Denise worked at several small firms where she was able to observe and learn from the mentors with whom she worked. In 2003 she started at Francis Cauffman Architects in Philadelphia and is now an Associate in the firm. She is LEED AP certified and is a Registered Architect in Pennsylvania as of 2008.
