End Date: 10/1/2011End Time: 4:30 PM

Event Description
Honey bees are an essential part of our ecological sustainability. Honey bees, however, are disappearing at an alarming rate and while there are many theories about the cause, there are no clear-cut answers. On October 1, join the Montgomery County Beekeepers' Association and Temple University Ambler for Bee Fest, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Honey Bee Symposium. The event has an ambitious schedule for seasoned beekeepers and newcomers alike. Speakers will include Dr. Tammy Horn, of the Eastern Kentucky Environmental Research Institute at Eastern Kentucky University and author of Bees in America: How the Honey Bee Shaped a Nation and Beeconomy: The Bounty of Women and Bees; Randy Oliver, owner and operator of a small commercial beekeeping enterprise in Northern California who has 40 years of experience in practical beekeeping and is a regular contributor to the American Bee Journal; and Dr. David Tarpy, Associate Professor of Entomology and the Extension Apiculturist at North Carolina State University. Topics for 2011 include: Dr. Tammy Horn — “Challenges to Creating Honey Corridors” and “Beeconomy: What Women and Bees Can Teach Us about Local Trade and the Global Market;” Dr. David Tarpy — “Benefits of Genetic Diversity Within Your Hives” and “The Quality of Commercial Queens;” and Randy Oliver — “Bee Nutrition, Immuno-competence and Nosema” and “Natural Treatments for Varroa and the Future of Bee Breeding.”
