Event Description:
In the Red and Brown Water

A Philadelphia premiere of the complete trilogy of interconnected stories set in southern urban Louisiana by one of the nation’s most exciting new playwrights. Drawing on African mythology, McCraney spins a spiritual web of youthful yearning and blooming desire that embraces the intimate complexities of the contemporary African-American experience. The play, In the Red and Brown Water, is a coming-of-age story of Oya, a talented teenage athlete navigating her transition to womanhood. At once both poetically mythic and emotionally grounded, McCraney’s theatrical voice is utterly sublime, unique and deeply powerful.
