The division of the world's peoples into distinct groups, "red," "black," "white" or "yellow" peoples, has became so deeply embedded in our psyches, so widely accepted, many would promptly dismiss as crazy any suggestion of its falsity. Yet, that's exactly what this provocative, new three-hour series claims. Race: The Power of an Illusion questions the very idea of race as biology, suggesting that a belief in race is no more sound than believing that the sun revolves around the Earth.

Thanks to the support of the Stony Brook University Medical Center Development Council, breakthrough discoveries of dinosaurs and other backboned animals made over the years in Madagascar by Distinguished Service Professor David Krause and his team of researchers are part of a permanent exhibit in the Stony Brook University Medical Center lobby. Most of the fossils in the exhibit are on display for public viewing for the very first time.

Dr. Krause is the founder and Executive Director of the Ankizy Fund, which raises funds for the healthcare and education of the children of Madagascar. To learn more, visit www.ankizy.org.

Stony Brook Southampton

The Red Watch Band movement started at SUNY Stony Brook and is being implemented nationwide. It is designed to end alcohol overdose deaths by teaching students how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon professional help when every second counts.

Red Watch Band is not an anti-drinking program, but a bystander intervention program designed to prevent student deaths from toxic drinking.

Toxic drinking is an epidemic on college campus across America. More than 700 high school and college students die each year from toxic drinking.

The mission of the Red Watch Band is to provide campus community members with the knowledge, awareness and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths. It is our goal to have all faculty and staff to participate in the Red Watch Band training, where you will receive education in recognizing and responding to alcohol emergencies as well as CPR training.

Faculty and staff should set the example for students in supporting the Red Watch Band program and encourage students to enroll in the training.

A special Red Watch Band training session has been established for faculty and staff for Friday, Feb. 12 from 2-6 pm. To sign up for this training session call Mike Kampf at 632-5051 or Ginny St. John at 632-5069.

LeE HARVey OsMOND is the brainchild of Canada's Tom Wilson, from Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. Tom brought together an eclectic group of friends, a few Cowboy Junkies, and some Skydiggers, to develop a new sound they christened acid folk. With hypnotic rhythms and a lot of groove, the group of friends now known as LeE HARVeY OsMOND, created a sound that comes creeping out of the Northern woods and is oozing across the Great Lakes into the South, following the same path The Band did forty years before.

A Quiet Evil, the first release by LeE HARVeY OsMOND is produced by Michael Timmons (Cowboy Junkies) and includes performances by Tom Wilson, Margo Timmons, Michael Timmon, Colin Linden, Brent Titcomb on originals as well as a cover of a Velvet Underground classic . Whether performing as a stripped-down show by Tom Wilson and a friend or two, or with a full band that could include just about anyone on the Canadian music scene, LeE HARVeY OsMOND will take every audience member along with them on their hypnotic musical journey.

The song's evolution tells a dramatic story of America's radical past using one of the most influential protest songs ever written as its epicenter. The saga brings viewers face-to-face with the terror of lynching even as it spotlights the courage and heroism of those who fought for racial justice when to do so was to risk ostracism and livelihood if white, and death if Black. Stony Brook Southampton - Duke Lecture Hall

David Rakoff's New York Times bestsellers, Fraud and Don't Get Too Comfortable, have established him as one of today's funniest, most insightful writers. A two-time recipient of the Lambda Book Award for Humor, Rakoff is a regular contributor to Public Radio International's This American Life and The New York Times Magazine, a correspondent for Outside and Writer-at-Large for GQ. His writing has also appeared in Vogue, Salon, Seed, Condé Nast Traveler, The New York Observer and Wired, among others. He recently contributed the essay on Utah for the 2008 book State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America and is working on a new book entitled Half Empty.

Rakoff has worked in theater with David and Amy Sedaris on their plays Stitches, The Little Freida Mysteries, The Book of Liz and the Obie award-winning One Woman Shoe. He has portrayed Lance Loud and poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, and can be seen in the films Capote and Strangers With Candy.
