division of the world's peoples into distinct groups, "red," "black,"

implemented nationwide. It is designed to end alcohol overdose deaths
by teaching students how to handle alcohol emergencies and summon
professional help when every second counts.

Red Watch Band is not an anti-drinking program, but a bystander
intervention program designed to prevent student deaths from toxic
drinking.

Toxic drinking is an epidemic on college campus across America. More
than 700 high school and college students die each year from toxic
drinking.

The mission of the Red Watch Band is to provide campus community members with the knowledge, awareness and skills to prevent toxic drinking deaths. It is our goal to have all faculty and staff to participate in the Red Watch Band training, where you will receive education in recognizing and responding to alcohol emergencies as well as CPR training.

Faculty and staff should set the example for students in supporting the Red Watch Band program and encourage students to enroll in the training.

A special Red Watch Band training session has been established for faculty and staff for Friday, Feb. 12 from 2-6 pm. To sign up for this training session call Mike Kampf at 632-5051 or Ginny St. John at 632-5069.

Tom brought together an eclectic group of friends, a few Cowboy Junkies, and some Skydiggers, to develop a new sound they christened acid folk. With hypnotic rhythms and a lot of groove, the group of friends now known as LeE HARVeY OsMOND, created a sound that comes creeping out of the Northern woods and is oozing across the Great Lakes into the South, following the same path The Band did forty years before.

A Quiet Evil, the first release by LeE HARVeY OsMOND is produced by Michael Timmons (Cowboy Junkies) and includes performances by Tom Wilson, Margo Timmons, Michael Timmon, Colin Linden, Brent Titcomb on originals as well as a cover of a Velvet Underground classic . Whether performing as a stripped-down show by Tom Wilson and a friend or two, or with a full band that could include just about anyone on the Canadian music scene, LeE HARVeY OsMOND will take every audience member along with them on their hypnotic musical journey.

Tickets »

Film Biography: Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun (2/14/2010)

Start Date:

2/14/2010

Start Time:

4:30 PM

End Date:

2/14/2010

Daily 4:30 pm and 11:30 pm (ends February 14)
SBU-TV Campus Cable Channel 20 (Student Television)

Zora Neale Hurston, path-breaking novelist, pioneering anthropologist and one of the first black women to enter the American literary canon (Their Eyes Were Watching God), established the African American vernacular as one of the most vital, inventive voices in American literature. division of the world's peoples into distinct groups, "red," "black,"
"white" or "yellow" peoples, has became so deeply embedded in our
psyches, so widely accepted, many would promptly dismiss as crazy any
suggestion of its falsity. Yet, that's exactly what this provocative,
new three-hour series claims. Race: The Power of an Illusion
questions the very idea of race as biology, suggesting that a belief in
race is no more sound than believing that the sun revolves around the Earth.

Go Abroad, Get Ahead: Study Abroad & International Exchange Fair (2/16/2010)

Start Date:

2/16/2010

Start Time:

11:00 AM

End Date:

2/16/2010

End Time:

2:00 PM

West Campus - SAC- Student Activities Center
Room: Lobby

An international academic experience is now a necessity for students who want to remain competitive for employment or professional/ graduate study. division of the world's peoples into distinct groups, "red," "black,"

ASA: SODOKU Tournament (2/17/2010)

Start Date:

2/17/2010

Start Time:

10:30 AM

End Date:

2/17/2010

End Time:

3:30 PM

West Campus - SAC- Student Activities Center
Room: Ballroom B

Chill Fest 2010 »

Celebrate Black History Month With Fine Cuisine (2/17/2010)

Start Date:

2/17/2010

Start Time:

12:00 PM

End Date:

2/17/2010

End Time:

2:00 PM

Enjoy a cultural lunch cooked by our Executive Chefs in FSA.

5th Annual Black History Month Essay & Speech Contest (2/17/2010)

Start Date:

2/17/2010

Start Time:

12:50 PM

End Date:

2/17/2010

End Time:

2:10 PM

West Campus - Student Union
Room: UNITI Cultural Center

An essay and speech contest highlighting the 2010 Black History Month theme: "Sankofa: "The Dream in the 21st Century: Fulfilled or Deferred?"

Application deadline: February 10, 5:00 pm. The song's evolution tells a dramatic story of America's radical past using one of the most influential protest songs ever written as its epicenter. The saga brings viewers face-to-face with the terror of lynching even as it spotlights the courage and heroism of those who fought for racial justice when to do so was to risk ostracism and livelihood if white, and death if Black. It examines the history of lynching, and the interplay of race, labor and the left, and popular culture as forces that would give rise to the Civil Rights Movement. division of the world's peoples into distinct groups, "red," "black,"

Department of Neurobiology & Behavior Seminar (2/18/2010)

Start Date:

2/18/2010

Start Time:

12:00 PM

End Date:

2/18/2010

West Campus - Life Sciences Building
Room: 038

Alfredo Kirkwood, Ph.D., Mind/Brain Institute, Department of Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University, will be giving a talk on "The Polarity of Plasticity in Visual Cortex."

Coffee/Tea & Cookies at 11:45
Host: Arianna Maffei

Black History Month Film Screening (2/18/2010)

Start Date:

2/18/2010

Start Time:

1:00 PM

End Date:

2/18/2010

End Time:

3:00 PM

West Campus - Social & Behavioral Sciences Building
Room: Africana Studies Library, Room S-224

Sponsored by the Department of Africana Studies and the Africana Studies Students Alliance Club.
