Living World Lecture
Start Date: 9/20/2013Start Time: 7:30 PM
End Date: 9/20/2013

Event Description:

Speaker: Jeffrey Levinton, Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolution, Stony Brook University

Topic: Oyster Restoration: Dreams and Realities

Oysters were once abundant throughout our waters, especially in New York Harbor, from the harbor to the northern reaches of Haverstraw Bay. In Great South Bay, they included the signature Blue Point oysters and oyster beds were widespread and attracted and enhanced biodiversity. But oysters are largely gone and oyster beds essentially are nonexistent, except for Long Island Sound. The lecture will address this disappearance and the renewed hope that oysters can be restored to New York Harbor and other areas.
