Event Description Freelance
Mathematician Dr. Jeffrey Weeks will deliver three talks for the Della
Pietra Lecture Series at the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics. Lectures are free and open
to the public.
Thursday, May 3
SCGP Lecture Hall, Room 102
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Della Pietra Lecture Series: Symmetry: Folding and Unfolding
In this hands-on workshop participants will see how every symmetrical pattern has an “unfolded form” and a “folded form” and learn an easy way to name symmetry patterns based on their folded forms. Pre-printed copies of symmetrical patterns will be provided. Participants with iPads are encouraged to bring them, but they are not required.
Thursday, May 3
SCGP Main Auditorium, Room 103
7:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Della Pietra Lecture Series: The Shape of Space
The capstone talk
of this series is geared toward a general audience (middle school through
high school students in particular). Dr. Weeks will discuss that while
the universe may seem infinite, that infinity may be an illusion.
During this presentation, he will use computer games to introduce the
concept of a multi-connected universe. Interactive 3D graphics and
satellite data will also provide tantalizing clues to the true shape of
our universe.
Friday, May 4
SCGP Lecture Hall, Room 102
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Della Pietra Lecture Series: Visualizing 4D
Dr. Weeks
will present an introductory lesson on
visualizing four-dimensional space, with physical and philosophical
applications.
