Event Description:
The Center for Dance, Movement, and Somatic Learning will present its annual dance performance with Joya Powell as this year's ensemble choreographer, premiering "Tanz-Consciousness." The highlight of the show, "Inner Iron Curtain," travels through the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany. It tells the story of families being torn apart, the desperate need to break away from their society, and how some may have built walls within themselves as the Berlin Wall was being created before them. This choreography also depicts the sudden changes in emotion as societal changes happened rapidly. "Understand Your Ground," inspired by the Trayvon Martin trials, provokes the senses and invokes thought about our current society’s stand on racial stereotypes and prejudices. Dancers weave in and out of emotions stemming from the case, including movement representations of the viral reactions people have included on the Internet, and looks to find humanity in our humanity. In addition to the creative work described, another featured piece, "Anne and Her Rosas," is a multimedia piece that it is inspired by and is a revisit of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker's choreography, "Rosas danst Rosas." Through technology the audience becomes a part of the piece. It is a social commentary about how we see ourselves, either conforming to or resisting the constraints of societal norms.
