Helen's current research interests are focused in three areas: issues of academic and professional persistence in engineering education; assessment of teaching and learning in innovative learning spaces and active learning classrooms; and the use of ePortfolios and folio thinking related practices in general education, the disciplines, and in student affairs. Helen and her colleagues Tracy Penny-Light and John Ittelson are the authors of Documenting Learning with ePortfolios: A Guide for College Instructors (2011).

In 1999, while teaching in Vermont, she received a sizable grant from the Department of Employment and Training to implement ePortfolios in her classes. She has been a strong proponent for the use of ePortfolios since.
