Della Pietra Lecture Series: Professor Tadashi Tokieda
Start Date: 2/9/2016Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Date: 2/9/2016

Event Description:
Tadashi Tokieda is the Poincaré Distinguished Visiting Professor at Stanford and the Director of Studies in Mathematics at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He grew up as a painter in Japan, became a classical philologist in France, and has been an applied mathematician in the US and elsewhere; he is also active in outreach in the developing world via the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. One of his lines of activity is inventing, collecting, and studying toys—simple objects from daily life that can be found or made in minutes, yet which, if played with imaginatively, exhibit behaviors so surprising that they intrigue scientists for weeks.
