Stony Brook Opera to Perform at BNL
Start Date: 11/18/2015Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 11/18/2015

Event Description:
Stony Brook Associate Professor Timothy Long will host and conduct the performance. Sponsored by Brookhaven Science Associates, the event is free and open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory 16 and older must bring a photo ID.

Ensemble numbers for more than one solo voice−such as duets, trios, and quartets−are the glory of opera. The program is anchored with longer excerpts from Ruggero Leoncavallo's La Bohème (Act III) and Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier (the final trio and duet). Rounding out the rest of the program are the Rodolfo-Marcello duet from Puccini's La Bohème, the quartet from Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and two scenes from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (the duet "Sull'aria" for Susanna and the Countess from Act III), and Così Fan Tutte (the Sextet from Act I). The program concludes with Hanna's nostalgic song "Vilja," from Lehar's operetta, The Merry Widow, with the rest of the singers taking the chorus parts.

The selections will be performed with piano accompaniment and sung in the original languages, with projected titles in English. Performing these selections will be the talented young singers of Stony Brook Opera, under the musical direction of David Lawton, and staged by Brenda Harris.
