Department of Energy Presentation with Edward McGinnis
Start Date: 3/27/2015Start Time: 3:00 PM
End Date: 3/27/2015

Event Description:

Perspective on the Changing Global Landscape of Nuclear Energy Development

US Department of Energy's Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Nuclear Energy Policy and Cooperation Edward McGinnis is responsible for the Department of Energy's international civilian nuclear energy activities, including international nuclear energy research, development and demonstration cooperation, international framework and partnership development, international nuclear energy policy, and other international civilian nuclear energy-related activities carried out by the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy.

Abstract: Post Fukushima, global expansion of nuclear energy is still occurring–in both existing and new markets. The International Atomic Energy Agency reports, there are 440 currently operating power plants and over 68 under construction world-wide. The World Nuclear Association (WNA) estimates that 172 reactors are planned in 26 countries in the next 15 years. The global nuclear landscape is shifting from the U.S. and West Europe to the Far East, Africa, Middle East and Central Europe. The implications of this shift are enormous. As these newcomer countries develop nuclear power programs and continue to move forward, the U.S. supports their access to nuclear power for peaceful purpose. The US will continue to promote and foster the safe and secure use of nuclear power globally through bilateral and multilateral engagements to include research, development and deployment cooperation.

This presentation is free and open to the public. Followed by a Q&A session.
