Undergraduate Colleges Commons Day: First-Year Book Reading by Anne Fadiman
Start Date: 10/16/2013Start Time: 1:00 PM
End Date: 10/16/2013

Event Description
Each year, a text is selected for the entire incoming class to read as part of the First Year Reading Program. This year's text is The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, award-winning writer, essayist, and editor. The book chronicles the trials of an epileptic Hmong child and her family living in Merced, California. Fadiman’s sensitive, incisive treatment of the unbreachable gulf between the Hmong and American medical systems won her a National Book Critics' Circle Award. The Washington Post called the book "an intriguing, spirit-lifting, extraordinary exploration."
