Spring into Action and Get Screened for Vascular Disease
Start Date: 4/28/2012Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Date: 4/28/2012End Time: 4:00 PM
Event Description
Are you 60 or older? Do you have one or more of the following risk factors for an aneurysm, stroke or vascular disease?

• Current or past smoker
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• Family history of aortic aneurysm

Stony Brook University Medical Center is offering free screening tests to identify the presence of vascular disease. Performed by a vascular technologist during a single visit, the tests include:

• Carotid ultrasound, to check for clogged carotid arteries in the neck, which can lead to stroke

• Abdominal aortic ultrasound, to test for aortic aneurysms, which can burst if reaching a large size

•Ankle-brachial index, to check for PAD or peripheral arterial disease which may poses a threat to your legs' health and is often a sign of heart disease.

The screening process for all three tests is quick—about 10 minutes for each test—and painless. Telephone pre-registration and a brief qualifying interview are required. Your primary care physician will receive a copy of the report. Those with positive test results will be able to discuss the results immediately with our specialists, and follow-up appointments can be made on site.
