Besides all the food and fun provided, we are thrilled to announce that the John Lennon Tour Bus is pulling into Rollins!!! Not only can you tour the bus, but you can participate in the production of music, digital photography, and video to demonstrate the things you really care about! Glenn E. Miller (Class of 1975) is the Deputy Division Head of the Information Technology Services Division of the Space Telescope Science Institute. Since joining the STScI staff in 1983, he has been involved in several areas of the STScI including observatory operations, software development and information technology. Miller was instrumental in the design and development of the HST Proposal Entry Processor, Remote Proposal Submission, and Spike Scheduling systems. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles on the development of HST planning software and the application of advanced techniques to scientific applications and observatory operations.

Now in its third year, Dance Marathon is the largest and most successful student-run philanthropy at RollinsCollege. In 2007, the inaugural event nearly doubled its fund raising goal and raised more than $35,000 for Children's Miracle Network. That year, Rollins' Dance Marathon was named the "Best New Dance Marathon" out of 17 launched nationally and was recognized as the most successful first-year dance marathon ever produced in the event's 13-year history. Each fall, a variety of events are held to support Dance Marathon culminating with a 12-hour marathon, which will be held this year on Saturday, November 14. To date, Rollins' Dance Marathon has raised more than $70,000 and every penny raised goes directly to ArnoldPalmerHospital for Children in Orlando and the Shand’s Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida.

Children's Miracle Network began in 1983 to actively support better health care for kids. Today more than 170 hospitals throughout the United States and Canada, specializing in treating children, make up Children's Miracle Network. The organization is unique in that 100 percent of the money raised locally stays in the local community to benefit the participating Children's Miracle Network hospital.

This event will give members of the Rollins community a chance to taste, smell, hear, see features of another culture.

This first module, focusing on Mediterranean culture (particularly that of Lebanon), is part of a series of modules that will highlight different world cultures.

Attending this event, participants will learn how to prepare and cook light but traditional Mediterranean dishes. The preparation will be overseen by members of the school and/or community who are a part of, descended from, or intimately familiar with this culture.

The preparing, cooking, and eating of the select dishes will be set to modern and traditional Lebanese music. And featured will be select Mediterranean artworks, instruments, and tools. Following the meal, we will all laugh together, Laughing Club-style. Come and enjoy great food, music, learning, and laughter!

This year's theme is sustainability, focusing on reducing and reusing, rather than just recycling! There will be tons of different booths, vendors, and activities, including:

T-shirt decorating: painted footprints on Recycling Day shirts
Finding out how big your carbon footprint is
A seed-bomb activity, hosted by Rollins' Organic Gardening Club
Vendors including Homegrown (an Orlando food co-op), Bookworm used bookstore, 10,000 Villages, and Big Wheel Provisions
Information booths will include the Rollins Bike Club, SPECTRUM, Nourish International and INB Club, sustainable camping with R.O.C., Ultimate Frisbee
Prizes!!!

There will be an opportunity to donate money and supplies to Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge and Rollins' school supply drive for students in Guatemala, as well as feminine hygiene products to the organization Tampon Task Force for disadvantaged women.

In our zeal to embrace the wonders of the electronic age, are we sacrificing our literary culture? Renowned critic Sven Birkerts believes the answer is an alarming yes. In The Gutenberg Elegies, he explores the impact of technology on the experience of reading. Drawing on his own passionate, lifelong love of books, Birkerts examines how literature intimately shapes and nourishes the inner life. What does it mean to "hear" a book on audiotape, decipher its words on a screen, or interact with it on CD-ROM? Are books as we know them dead?

At once a celebration of the complex pleasures of reading and a boldly original challenge to the new information technologies, The Gutenberg Elegies is an essential volume for anyone who cares about the past and future of books.

A group of faculty have organized a book discussion group to read the revised edition of Sven Birkerts' book The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age. (2006).

Currently in its seventh year, Rollins Improv Players (RIP) brings the joy of spontaneous theatre to the Winter Park and Rollins communities. Using your suggestions, RIP creates a unique show on the spot. An audition-only performance group, RIP is comprised of sixteen students from varying disciplines, ranging from sophomore to senior year.

Splintered explores the consequences of a single choice, spinning improvisers into a parallel universe based on an audience decision. This original long form improvisational structure was created collaboratively by a group of students in 2008 using an original concept by Ana Eligio.

So, come on! Check out something different. You won’t be disappointed.

The two hour program covers a variety of topics including transmission methods, treatment options, community resources, oppression of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, their personal challenges, and the importance of allies in the community.
