Event Description: "Encouraging American Genius" and other Tales from the Front: American Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art
This lecture will highlight recent findings on the Corcoran Gallery of Art's rich holdings of historic American paintings and will trace the fascinating history of America's oldest dedicated art museum. These findings culminated in the Corcoran's new collection catalogue, Corcoran Gallery of Art: American Paintings to 1945, in March 2011. The first publication to authoritatively document and interpret one of the the finest and most renowned collections of historic American paintings in the world, the catalogue comprises a fully illustrated 336-page hardback volume as well as a companion website.
Sarah Cash is the Corcoran’s Bechhoefer Curator of American Art. During her tenure, she has organized the loan exhibitions Sargent and the Sea (traveled 2009–10), for which she edited and co-authored the accompanying scholarly catalogue; Encouraging American Genius: Master Paintings from the Corcoran Gallery of Art (traveled 2005–07); Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms: Paintings that Inspired a Nation (2004); and Albert Bierstadt’s California Scenery, Sunset View (2003).
