Gallery talks will focus on the Pulitzer prize-winning poet Elizabeth Bishop and how travel informed her art.

Elizabeth Bishop was a great world traveler, but she often lived for extended periods in the places she traveled, including more than a decade off and on in Key West, and almost two decades in Brazil. Yet Bishop was never really at home anywhere. Her life and art unfold as a series of displacements that prompt her deep reflections on the ethical questions of travel and our desire to find a home. The talks will be a journey through some of the key questions of travel that Bishop’s work asks us to consider, as well as a discussion of how Bishop’s poetry produces some of its painterly effects, bringing it closer in line with the paintings that hang beside her poem Questions of Travel in the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.

Bethany Hicok is Associate Professor of English at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. She is the author of Degrees of Freedom: American Women Poets and the Women’s College, 1905-1955 (Bucknell University Press) and co-editor of Elizabeth Bishop in the 21st Century, a collection of new essays on Elizabeth Bishop (University of Virginia Press). Her articles on modern poetry have appeared in a variety of scholarly journals, and she has contributed chapters on teaching to two recent books. She is currently writing a book on Elizabeth Bishop in Brazil.
