Please join Amy Johnston, Assistant Curator of Modern Prints & Drawings, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., as she speaks in relation to the exhibition Florida's Useable Past: The Sunshine State and the Index of American Design.
In this lecture Johnston will use examples from the exhibition—currently on view at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum—to discuss the history and operation of the Index of American Design, while describing the influence the Index had on American culture.
The Index of American Design is a group of over 18,000 watercolor renderings
of American decorative art objects from the colonial period through the
nineteenth century. Produced between 1935 and 1942 under the
auspices of the Federal Art Project, it is currently housed in the collection of
the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The project included objects from
thirty-five states and employed hundreds of artists. Ms. Johnston will explain how the collection functions today.
Amy Johnston is a Thomas P. Johnson Distinguished Visiting Scholar.
