| “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” Book Talk |
|
Event Description Each year, a book is selected with the aim of engaging incoming first-year students with topics of leadership and citizenship. This year, the selection committee made up of faculty and staff selected Rebecca Skloot’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, known to scientists as HeLa.
Lacks was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization and more. These cells have been bought and sold by the billions. It’s a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we’re made of.
Olin Library is sponsoring a book talk on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at the International House. We will discuss Parts 1 & 2 of the book.
We will discuss Part 3 on Tuesday, October 18 at 4 p.m. in the International House.
