CFAM Lecture--Jeffreen Hayes
Start Date: 10/10/2017Start Time: 6:00 PM
Event Description:
Join noted scholar of American art Jeffreen Hayes as she lifts the veil on connections between curatorial practice, leadership, and building community through participation.

Jeffreen M. Hayes is an art historian, curator, and Executive Director of the non-profit ThreeWalls in Chicago. Over the years, Hayes has developed a curatorial and leadership practice that invites community participation. She experienced success with this approach in Birmingham, Alabama as the Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Curatorial Fellow at Birmingham Museum of Art from January 2012 – June 2013. During her tenure, Hayes organized performance art projects and the exhibition Etched in Collective History which commemorated Birmingham’s civil rights history.

Since arriving in Chicago in 2013, Hayes has worked with local artists, supporting their community-engaged projects and leading engagement efforts. She ensures that artists include community members in their projects, encouraging true community collaboration. Her time in Chicago includes working at Rebuild Foundation, where she served as the Executive Director. While at Rebuild, Hayes provided organizational structure and supported Rebuild Neighbors in the creation of a space for themselves within the organization. Currently, Hayes works with artists, including Jan Tichy, Marissa Lee Benedict and David Rueter, to build community and artist collaborations.

Hayes earned a PhD in American Studies from the College of William and Mary, an MA in Art History from Howard University, and a BA from Florida International University in Humanities. She has worked for several museums and cultural institutions, including Hampton University Museum, Library of Congress, and the National Gallery of Art. Hayes held fellowships at Ithaca College in the Art History department and in the Cartoon and Caricature Division at Library of Congress as a Swann Foundation Fellow. Currently, Hayes is a Chief Executive Community and Culture Fellow, a program facilitated by National Arts Strategies. She continues to organize exhibitions and projects that span the early 20th century to contemporary time, with a focus on art of the African Diaspora. Hayes recently curated an exhibition, Silos, for American University and is working on a show about Augusta Savage for the Crummer Museum in Jacksonville, Florida.
