Event Description Remembering Eatonville: A Reception for the 2012 Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities This year, the opening event of the Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities (ZORA! Festival) will be a roundtable panel discussion, "Eatonville: The Town That Freedom Built," that will focus on discussing Eatonville's historic importance. Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, the festival's theme of "Rise of Community: The Town of Eatonville Models 125 Years of Self-Governance" serves to highlight Eatonville's importance as an example of African-American autonomy. Beyond Zora Neale Hurston's fame, Eatonville's story challenges our assumptions about the African-American experience by highlighting the ways black communities promoted dignity, protected culture, and fostered economic security. In celebration and recognition of this historic anniversary, the Africa and African-American Studies Program is encouraging students, faculty, and staff to join us in welcoming guests and participants to campus for a reception. The reception is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served. |
