Crafts Center Exhibition: Chinese Brush Paintings by Ellen Ko (3/20/2013 - 6/15/2013)

The Craft Center

The Crafts Center presents an exhibition of Chinese Brush Paintings by local artist and Crafts Center instructor Ellen Ko. Ms. Ellen Ma-Lin Ko started taking traditional Chinese brush painting as a child from two well-known professional artists in Taiwan, Lin Shen-Jean and Shao Yu-Huan. She has continued her practice of Chinese brush painting ever since her graduation from the World College of Journalism in Taiwan. Her artwork has been shown in several local art shows and art galleries here and in Atlanta. Her painting has been accepted in many juried shows and she has won many art awards and bank purchase awards. A reception will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.

The Literacy Council of Wake County is hosting its Read to Succeed BBQ Feed on Saturday, June 8th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Wheeler Waterfront Conference Center. The event will celebrate the Literacy Council’s free services to adults, families, and at-risk youth in Wake County! The celebration will feature BBQ, drinks (both beer and non-alcoholic beverages), live music by the band Kudzu Ramblers and a silent auction. Auction items include: Pottery, Restaurant Gift Certificates, Zoo passes, tickets to various museums, orchestra performances, the ballet, golf passes, Carolina Panther memorabilia, and more. Artwork and jewelry by local artists will also be available! Tickets are on sale now and cost $20 each for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The Literacy Council of Wake County is a nonprofit organization established in 1970 and dedicated to teaching adults, families, and youth how to improve their reading and writing skills through the use of volunteer, one-on-one tutors and small group classes. In Wake County alone, 17% of the population is illiterate. The community is invited to support the Council’s effort by attending the Read to Succeed BBQ Feed.

Hillsborough Street

For homecoming parades, game-day victories, graduation, and photos at the Belltower, Hillsborough Street is where NC State celebrates. It has been for generations. So what better place to throw the biggest event of the year?

Join us on Hillsborough Street on Saturday, Aug. 24, for Packapalooza, NC State's newest annual tradition. Packapalooza is an all-day block party and street festival capping off Wolfpack Welcome Week. We will have everything it takes to celebrate in NC State style, including great music, activities throughout the day, and fun entertainment for the whole family.

Throughout the day you will have opportunities to learn about NC State’s traditions, including the history of the Belltower and what makes it chime. We’ll also show how we are making an impact on the world around us.

A festival would not be complete without food. Restaurants and merchants along Hillsborough Street are looking forward to being a part of NC State’s annual Packapalooza. There will also be fair foods like turkey legs, roasted corn, and deep-fried candy bars. And, of course, Howling Cow ice cream!
