Cyber Security Awareness Month: Plain English Data
Start Date: 10/8/2013Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 10/8/2013End Time: 1:00 PM

Event Description:
John Baines of OIT Security and Compliance will present “Plain English Data” on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from noon to 1 p.m. in 216 Scott Hall. Data is the new currency and it’s everywhere. That data may be your credit card, health, or research pre-patent data, and many individuals, organizations and governments will pay for this information.

In 2012, the total number of higher education records breached reached an all-time high - 1,977,412 records (an increase of more than 24 percent over 2011 records). According to TeamSHATTER, the institutions with the highest number of records breached in 2012 were the University of Nebraska, (654,000), the University of North Carolina (350,000), Arizona State University (300,000) and Northwest Florida State College (279,000).

It is critical that everyone at NC State understand the sensitivity of business-related data so that they can put protective actions in place. The newly released Data Sensitivity Framework (DSF) provides a relevant conceptual framework for university data stewards and IT personnel. This framework along with two new NC State University documents - the DSF FAQ document and the Plain English version of the Data Management Procedures Regulation - will show campus users the implications of data-based security and how to implement security measures. Come and find out how!

Lunch will be provided, and you will have a change to win door prizes. To register, visit Classmate at

There will be various Cyber Security activities offered throughout the month of October. For more information, visit the Cyber Security Awareness Month website at
