Translating Technology: Creating Small Group Learning Stations in an Online Course
Start Date: 11/13/2013Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Date: 11/13/2013End Time: 1:00 PM

Event Description:
Faced with a documented gap in the digital expectations and expertise of students, teachers, and administrators in K-12 education (Project Tomorrow, 2013), a group in the College of Education has created “Learning Stations” for a multi-section service course, “School and Society.” Typically, these stations have involved helping students in small groups cycle through various tools and approaches to technology for a large class project. Two sections are entirely online versions of the course, so the challenge has been to bring the experience of small group stations to the online learning environment. This fall is the first semester these virtual stations will be tried. In this seminar, participants will discuss what was attempted, how the virtual stations were developed, and how the stations worked in the online sections. This faculty-led seminar may be particularly useful for instructors who are considering teaching online and want to effectively recreate experiences they have had in their face-to-face classes.
