Crossroads Series: Michael Specter of The New Yorker
Start Date: 2/22/2018Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Date: 2/22/2018End Time: 6:30 PM

Event Description:
Register now for the next event in the College of Sciences Crossroads Series. In his talk, “The Cost of Living in a World of Lies,” The New Yorker‘s Michael Specter will discuss opposition in the United States to the idea that data drives progress, demonstrated in public debates over vaccines, GMOs and climate change. Among the questions he will pose: Can science flourish if facts are treated no differently than lies? Is an era of stunning technical achievement dissolving into a new Dark Age?

Specter is an award-winning journalist and author who has worked for The New Yorker since 1998. He frequently focuses on topics related to science, technology and public health, including disease in the developing world, agricultural biotechnology, avian influenza, synthetic biology and the world’s diminishing freshwater resources. His most recent book, Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet and Threatens Our Lives, was published in 2009.
