Eclipse Day Celebration
Start Date: 8/21/2017Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 8/21/2017End Time: 4:00 PM

Event Description:

The College of Sciences invites you to celebrate Eclipse Day on the Brickyard. For the first time in 99 years, a total solar eclipse will cross the United States. During this rare celestial event, the moon will pass between the sun and the Earth, appearing to block the sun for almost an hour and a half. The eclipse will occur during the afternoon, peaking at 2:44 p.m.

The celebration will be full of science activities and eclipse-related fun, including:

  • Safe ways to view the eclipse, including a telescope with solar filter, free solar glasses and a pinhole camera creation station
  • Citizen science activities to monitor changes in weather and animal behavior over the course of the eclipse
  • A mini weather tower on-site and real-time streams of solar observations and weather data along the path of totality
  • Weather balloon launch with NC State’s Soundings Club
  • Physics demonstrations
  • Eclipse button giveaway
  • Eclipse- and astronomy-themed materials available for checkout from NCSU Libraries
  • Resource fair featuring a number of campus organizations
  • Entertainment, including games like beanbag toss
  • Food and water stations, featuring Moon Pies
  • Misting tents to keep you cool!

Safety Information

It’s not safe to look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse, even with regular sunglasses. We’ll have tools available to help you view the event safely.

Visitor Parking

Free parking is available at the Carter-Finley Stadium lots off Trinity Road or the Varsity Lot off Varsity Drive. NC State’s Wolfline bus service is available free of charge, and routes run every 15 minutes from those lots to the Brickyard. From the Carter-Finley lots, ride the Route 6 bus and use the Scott Hall stop to access the Brickyard. From the Varsity lot, ride Route 5 and use the D.H. Hill stop to access the Brickyard.

Very limited paid public parking is available in the Dan Allen Deck and Coliseum Deck, as well as in metered spots on Hillsborough Street. Note that roads around the Brickyard are gated and accessible by permit only. Consult these maps to help you find your way to the public lots and event location. For a small fee, you may also use the new LimeBike campus bike share program to travel to the Brickyard from other areas of campus.
