Event Description
The mix of movements presented by the Raleigh Civic Symphony in ‘Symphony Remix’ is intended to raise questions rather than provide answers. For seasoned listeners, this juxtaposition may be both jarring and insightful, hearing old friends in a new context. For new listeners, the hypothetical connection of movements may be equally persuasive as a particular composer’s stylistic consistency.
In the early decades of the formation of the symphony as a genre, Haydn and Mozart solidified the symphony’s standing as the embodiment of the most profound instrumental statements from a composer, more so than the solo sonata or concerto. However, it was Beethoven who single-handedly shaped the four separate movements of the symphony into an over-arching narrative of heroic proportions embodying conflict, struggle, and ultimate triumphant resolution. The diverse movements presented come from various 19th century composers and follow that overall symphonic plan. This program features guest pianist Olga Kleiankina, directed by Dr. Randolph Foy.
