| Under-mining health? Health, wealth and forests in a mining area of Orissa, India. |

Event Description In this month's presentation, Dr. Erin Sills, associate professor of forestry and environmental resources, examines the impacts of iron ore mining in Keonjhar district in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.
Expansion of mining in eastern India has been controversial, largely because of
impacts on previously isolated environments and peoples. Environmental health problems
draw particular concern, because they affect people who live in mineral-rich areas but do not
necessarily derive benefits from mining. This parallels worldwide concerns about “the social
and spatial distribution of both mining’s benefits and its socioeconomic and environmental
costs” (Bridge 2004) and well-publicized conflicts between mining companies and local
communities (Kemp, Owen, Gotzmann, & Bond 2010). |
