Event Description 2011-12 Landscape Architecture Lecture Series
Collaboration: Beyond the Silo
City of Raleigh’s Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan: Integrating Pedestrians in the City’s Transportation System
Montell (Monty) Irvin, P.E., PTOE President and CEO of Ramey Kemp & Associates, Inc.
Rynal Stephenson, P.E., Manager of the Transportation Group at Ramey Kemp & Associates, Inc.
The public transportation network in the City of Raleigh is comprised of several modes of travel including automobile, bus, pedestrian, bike, train and airplane. The City is in the process of preparing a Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan that will address planning, design and policies to enhance the transportation network for pedestrians throughout the City. Ramey Kemp & Associates, Inc. was on the project team, lead by Toole Design Group, to identify and evaluate several specific locations in the City and develop recommendations to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians within the overall transportation network. The presentation will discuss the selection of these locations, the evaluation process, and key recommendations for better integrating pedestrians into the locations heavily used by automobiles and buses.
Monty Irvin is a graduate of Louisiana State University. He moved from south Louisiana to Raleigh in 1990, and joined Ramey Kemp & Associates in 1995, where he served as the company’s Executive Vice President for over 15 years. In addition to being a registered Professional Engineer in numerous states, he was among the first in the nation to earn certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) by the Institute of Transportation Engineers. He is one of only ~2,400 internationally with this certification. In 2009, he received Business Leaders Media’s Triangle Movers and Shakers award.
Since the start of 2011, Rynal Stephenson has managed or been significantly involved in approximately 100 projects including preparation of Traffic Impact Analyses for future developments, large data collection projects across the state, and planning studies for new transportation projects. Among the transportation planning studies undertaken in 2011, he has served as project manager for Ramey Kemp & Associates’ portion of the City of Raleigh’s Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan. Rynal has also provided graduate level instruction at UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of City and Regional Planning.
Ramey Kemp & Associates (RKA) provides a wide range of transportation engineering services to major commercial, institutional, and governmental clients throughout the Southeastern United States. RKA specializes in traffic impact studies, traffic signal design, roadway design, traffic control/pavement marking plans, and environmental studies.
The lectures are free. Students wanting to earn 1 elective credit hour may register for the lecture series under LAR 582.004. Registered landscape architects may receive 1 CEU credit per lecture pending State Board approval.
Ramey Kemp engineers Montell W. Irvin, P.E., PTOE, President/CEO and Rynal Stephenson will discuss their current work on the design of Raleigh’s Pedestrian Plan.
Collaboration: “Beyond the Silo”
“Over its history, the landscape architecture profession has responded to societal trends by evolving ---sometimes toward civic design and planning, sometimes toward art and urban public space design, and most recently toward natural systems and sustainable infrastructure.
The profession, motivated by challenging economic, environmental, and political realities, continues to evolve. Many would argue that the future seems less about narrowing our focus and "defining our turf" to more about making new synergies with our associated professions and colleagues.
The NC State University 2011-12 Landscape Architecture Lecture Series, "Collaboration - Beyond the Silo" is an exploration of how collaborative synergies contribute to the making of healthier sustainable places and beautiful landscapes for our future.”
Dan Howe, Chair, Landscape Architecture Advisory Board
