VECTR Presents

Volunteer Opportunity

1/23/17
6:00 9.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Flint Energies

For the first time, Houston County will attempt to count its homeless population.  We know they exist, but no one has tried to determine how large the population is so we can work on getting resources in the local area.  In the short time VECTR has been open, we’ve found many of our local homeless are Veterans, which is extremely sad.

We need about 50 additional people to go out in teams of 4-5 to mapped areas of the city along with police escorts to count our homeless population and distribute hygiene/clothing items.  The event will take place on Monday, 23 January from 6pm – 9pm. There will also be training on January 12th. The command center is the Flint Energies building on Russell Parkway and Carl Vinson.

Please feel free to contact Brandon Miller for details.

M: Lecture, Medical Practices in the Civil War
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Macon Campus - Library
Macon Campus

A traveling exhibit that explores the history of amputations endured by injured soldiers – an important, albeit difficult to discuss, aspect of the U.S. Civil War –   is coming to the Middle Georgia State University library on the Macon Campus.

“Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War,” a National Library of Medicine exhibit, will be on display at MGA’s Macon Campus library from Tuesday, Jan. 17, through Saturday, Feb. 25. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The library’s regular operating hours are 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday and 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to the exhibit, Dr. Niels Eichhorn, assistant professor of History at MGA and a published Civil War historian, will give three related lectures on Civil War-era medical practices, also free and open to the public:

– 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, Lab 1 in the Macon Campus library, Medical Practices in the Civil War

– 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, Lab 1 in the Macon Campus library, Mid-Nineteenth Century Advances in Medicine

– 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in room 145 of the Charles H. Jones Building, Macon in the Civil War

From the U.S. National Library of Medicine website: “Although the exact number is not known, approximately 60,000 surgeries, about three quarters of all of the operations performed during the war, were amputations. Although seemingly drastic, the operation was intended to prevent deadly complications such as gangrene. Sometimes undertaken without anesthesia, and in some cases leaving the patient with painful sensations in the severed nerves, the removal of a limb was widely feared by soldiers.”

M: Lecture, Macon in the Civil War
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Macon Campus - Library

M: Mastering Table Dining Etiquette
4:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Macon Campus - Student Life Center

At any age, regardless of our station in life or salary, we learn – and continue to practice – table manners for two reasons: one is to make others comfortable, the second reason is to keep us from embarrassing ourselves. ~Gentleman's Gazette, 2013

The Office of Career Services is pleased to offer Mastering Table Dining Etiquette on March 2, 2017 from 4:30pm-6:30pm in the SLC, suite 254.  For the nominal cost of $10 per person, enjoy a multi-course menu and learn how to make a great impression over dinner. Table manner rules are not complicated, but hands-on practice can positively influence your ability to dinner properly so reserve your spot today.

Play details:
The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
