Murray Low: Inside Afro-Cuban Piano, Master Class Series
Start Date: 11/3/2009Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Date: 11/3/2009End Time: 8:30 PM
Event Description
Join Grammy-nominated pianist and Kuumbwa artist-in-residence Murray Low for a hands-on workshop and demonstration on the art of playing Afro-Cuban piano. In addition to explaining how to play basic "montunos" (Cuban piano patterns), Murray will explore how to appropriately interpret a wide variety of Cuban styles, from the Danzon to Timba. The role of the piano in the larger historical and musical context of Cuban music will also be discussed. The relationship of the piano to the bass and percussion will be examined, as will fundamental piano technique and ear training related to common Afro-Cuban rhythms and syncopation. Finally, Murray will talk about how Afro-Cuban playing can be incorporated into a traditional jazz context without compromising either idiom. Murray is a veteran of both the Latin jazz and straight-ahead jazz, having stints with Pete Escovedo, John Santos' Machete Ensemble, Wayne Wallace, John Calloway's Diaspora, and QBA.
