Title: The Liberal Arts During the Meta-Crisis

Description: The liberal arts confronts a world in the midst of a meta-crisis. As the Coronavirus pandemic unfolds, we’re witnessing the ways in which fragile systems--economic, geo-political, educational, public health, and technological--are not only interconnected but are also falling apart together. During this time, I argue, the liberal arts couldn’t be more important. I know this first-hand because my background in the liberal arts helped me to learn how to inquire into the things that matter most with others around the world. Yet to make plain its importance to culture, the liberal arts will also need to reinvent itself. It can do so, I conclude, by helping us to move beyond simply valuing critical thinking and critiquing injustices to embracing, while embodying, living wisdom.

Bio: Andrew Taggart is a practical philosopher. He asks and seeks to answer the most basic questions of human existence with others around the world. In 2009, he finished a Ph.D., left the academic life, and moved to New York City because he thought the most fundamental question of how to live needed to be brought back into our everyday lives. Each day he speaks via Zoom with business executives, tech entrepreneurs, artists, and other creatives throughout the US, Canada, and Europe about the nature of a good life. He is also the founder of Askole whose aim is to help technologists examine what, at bottom, they’re taking for granted. His ideas have been discussed in Quartz, The Guardian, Big Think, Wisconsin Public Radio, TEDx, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. He and his wife Alexandra, a painter, currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Latin American Speaker Series

Powered by Mellon
Tuesday, October 20, 2020 | 2:00 p.m.

Zoom Virtual Link: bit.ly/33dQl0y

Speaker: Dr. Doris Careaga (Chicana & Chicano Studies), Dr. Paulo "MC" Dutra (Spanish & Portugese), and Dr. Kathy McKnight (Spanish & Portugese)
Title: Rethinking Afro-Latino Culture in Mexico, the U.S. Southwest and Brazil

Description: What do the Mexican census, the Spanish empire and Hip-hop have in common? They all invite us to rethink how cultural expressions that trace roots to Africa shape Latinx cultures in the Americas. Three UNM faculty friends share their teaching and research around these interconnections.

Dr. Doris Careaga considers a new question on the 2020 Mexican census: Por sus antepasados y de acuerdo con sus costumbres y tradiciones, ¿Usted se considera Afromexicana(o), negra(o), o Afrodescendiente? After more than 25 years of strident activism, this question has finally appeared in Mexico's census. This is the first accounting of people of African descent in Mexico in more than a century. Will the newly "discovered" African presence in Mexico force a reexamination of the contours of Chicana and Chicano communities?

Dr. Kathy McKnight explores the arrival of the Black Moor Estebanico to New Mexico in the early 1500s. How do we rethink Black history in the US Southwest by studying the appearance and disappearance, the writing and rewriting of Estebanico in Spanish, Latino, and Anglo cultures?

Dr. Paulo “MC” Dutra briefly compares Brazilian group Racionais MC’s’s and American rapper Ice Cube’s lyrics to show how they symbolically (re)dimension contemporary “Blackness” as a result of the constant physical and symbolic clashes that started back in the regime of slavery.

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Rethinking Afro-Latino Culture in Mexico, the U.S. Southwest, and Brazil
Join the LAII for a presentation with Dr. Doris Careaga from Chicana & Chicano Studies and Dr. Paulo “MC” Dutra and Dr. Kathy McKnight from Spanish & Portuguese to discuss Rethinking Afro-Latino Culture in Mexico, the US Southwest, and Brazil. What do the Mexican census, the Spanish empire, and Hip-hop have in common? They all invite us to rethink how cultural expressions that trace roots to Africa shape Latinx cultures in the Americas. Three UNM faculty friends share their teaching and research around these interconnections.
