Event Image Writers Workshop with Poet Ruth Awad
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Main Campus

On Bearing Witness in Poetry: Writing Workshop with Poet Ruth Awad Many poets feel compelled to reflect on injustice, trauma, or violence they may not have experienced firsthand. But empathy is not enough to do this responsibly. This session will focus on how we can bear witness in our work and engage with difficult subject matter mindfully and generously. We will look at examples from contemporary poets for guidance. Author Bio: Ruth Awad is a Lebanese-American poet whose debut poetry collection Set to Music a Wildfire (Southern Indiana Review Press, 2017) won the 2016 Michael Waters Poetry Prize and the 2018 Ohioana Book Award for Poetry. She is the recipient of a 2016 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, she won the 2012 and 2013 Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Prize and the 2011 Copper Nickel Poetry Contest, and she was a finalist for the 2013 Ruth Lilly Fellowship. Her work has appeared in The New Republic, The Rumpus, The Missouri Review, The Journal, CALYX, Diode, The Adroit Journal, Vinyl Poetry, BOAAT Journal, and elsewhere. She lives in Columbus, Ohio. Copies of the author's book Set to Music a Wildfire will be available for sale in the Main Campus Bookstore by March 25th.
