1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Students on the March (Westside Campus Speaker Series)
The 50th Anniversary Westside Speaker Series begins with a presentation by Dr. O’Neill Blacker-Hanson - Students on the March: From the Mexican Revolution of 1910 to Teacher-Guerrillas of the 1970s to the 2014 Massacre of Ayotzinapa Guerrero, Mexico. On September 26, 2014 Mexicans across the country - and observers throughout the world - awoke to the news of yet another massacre. This was not related to drug cartels or personal vendettas. This was a slaughter of college students that has opened new and old wounds among Mexicans. Teachers-in-training at the rural college of Ayotzinapa in the southwestern state of Guerrero fit in a long line of students seeking changes in the Mexican government. From the early 20th century demands for access to education, to two important Cold War guerrilla movements in the state - one led by a graduate of Ayotzinapa - to recent protests across Latin America, students have been at the forefront of political engagement.

• Why is education such an important issue?
• Why did these students face such an extreme response?
• Why has Mexican society reacted with such persistent outrage?
• What can we learn from all this? And why should we care?
• What can we do about events south of our border?

Nelly Blacker-Hanson earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Washington. Her research and publications are among the first to examine the state of Guerrero during the conflictive Cold War years. She conducted research at the school in Ayotzinapa as well as earning the trust to conduct oral interviews with former graduates, teachers, and activists. Blacker-Hanson has taught a range of courses on Latin American history at the University of Washington, Bowdoin College, and Valparaiso University. She currently resides in Albuquerque.
