2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Mellon Humanities Grant Guest Speaker Andrew Taggart
Zoom Virtual Event Link: TBA

Speaker: Andrew Taggart
Title: The Liberal Arts During the Meta-Crisis
Description: The liberal arts confronts a world in the midst of a meta-crisis. As the Coronavirus pandemic unfolds, we’re witnessing the ways in which fragile systems--economic, geo-political, educational, public health, and technological--are not only interconnected but are also falling apart together. During this time, I argue, the liberal arts couldn’t be more important. I know this first-hand because my background in the liberal arts helped me to learn how to inquire into the things that matter most with others around the world. Yet to make plain its importance to culture, the liberal arts will also need to reinvent itself. It can do so, I conclude, by helping us to move beyond simply valuing critical thinking and critiquing injustices to embracing, while embodying, living wisdom.

Bio: Andrew Taggart is a practical philosopher. He asks and seeks to answer the most basic questions of human existence with others around the world. In 2009, he finished a Ph.D., left the academic life, and moved to New York City because he thought the most fundamental question of how to live needed to be brought back into our everyday lives. Each day he speaks via Zoom with business executives, tech entrepreneurs, artists, and other creatives throughout the US, Canada, and Europe about the nature of a good life. He is also the founder of Askole whose aim is to help technologists examine what, at bottom, they’re taking for granted. His ideas have been discussed in Quartz, The Guardian, Big Think, Wisconsin Public Radio, TEDx, The Washington Post, and elsewhere. He and his wife Alexandra, a painter, currently live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
