Spend the day viewing art in Washington, D.C. with artists, students and guests from Beverley Street Studio School, BRCC and Shenandoah Valley Art Center. The first stop will be at the National Gallery of Art to view the American Modernism exhibit and their collection as well as other nearby galleries, lunch on own. For those interested, the bus will depart at 3pm for the Phillips to see their permanent collection and to view the last day of the “White” exhibits by Richard Pousette-Dart and Robert Ryman. Final pick up will be at the NGA at 4:15 pm and the Phillips at 5pm.

Blue Ridge Community College announces a free presentation on the art and birding legacies of Earl Henry, Sr., slated Monday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Theatre (room V135) on the Weyers Cave campus. This inspiring program by Earl Henry, Jr. tells the story of a passion for birding through his father’s paintings, mounted birds and the recording of bird imitations captured in 1944, the year before the elder Henry went down with the USS Indianapolis in the closing days of World War II.

Earl Henry, Sr. caught the birding fever at age 12 when he began collecting Arm & Hammer bird cards – similar to today's baseball cards – with a bird on one side and notes on the reverse. His passion grew and in a short span of time, he not only became a war hero, but left a naturalist's legacy to be slowly unraveled by his son. This legacy includes 45 bird paintings, 135 mounted specimens in lifelike poses and a recording of more than 60 bird calls.

Note: Artwork created by Lt. Commander Dr. Earl Henry, Sr. will be on display Sept. 13-24 in the BRCC Fine Arts Center, along with WWII military uniforms and artifacts.

Historical interpreters Steve Edenbo and Ian Rose recreate the debate between Thomas Jefferson (third president of the United States, author of the Declaration of Independence) and Alexander Hamilton (first Secretary of the Treasury, author of the Federalist Papers, founder of the nation’s First Bank, and the face on the ten-dollar bill). Sparks fly and the Constitution rumbles as these two titans struggle to control the future of the new nation. Sponsored by Alpha Beta Gamma Business Honor Society and a Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation Strategic Initiative Grant.
