Event Description A piano player in a guitar player’s world, Kate Klim entered the singer/songwriter scene in 2002, her emotive use of word and melody quickly receiving acclaim (Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, Mountain Stage New-Song Contest 2005 and 2006, Cornell University Emerging Artist Award). She has opened for folk greats like Shawn Colvin and Richard Shindell, settling in Somerville, Massachusetts to record her first studio release with producer Crit Harmon (Marin Sexton, Lori McKenna) in 2006. Kate Klim was five years old when her family inherited a piano from a neighbor. She was the middle of five children (a captive audience, as she says) and even at that age, a storyteller. Born in Illinois and rerouted to Pennsylvania as she approached adolescence, Kate found comfort on her community’s stages, and solace in her songwriting. Upon finishing high school, she relocated to Boston and quickly caught the attention of local venues, namely Cambridge’s Club Passim, a club that would provide her with her earliest performance opportunities, and later invite her to open for Shawn Colvin. Several great New England artists, including Antje Duvekot’s breakout Big Dream Boulevard and Chris Trapper’s Gone Again have featured her voice and piano skills in their albums. Today, she can be found on the stages of the East Coast’s best listening rooms, delivering a performance of deeply personal music and comical between-song commentary. Early 2007 marks the release of her first studio album, Up and Down and Up Again, a true “labor of love” for both artist and producer. Recorded by renowned producer Crit Harmon, the album featured musicians Dave Mattacks (Paul McCartney, Elton John, Joan Armatrading), Richard Gates (Paula Cole, Suzanne Vega), Duke Levine (Jonathan Brooke, Mary Chapin Carpenter) and more. With several of the album’s songs having already placed in national song contests, it evokes the memory of a Tapestry-era Carole King (one of Kate’s most beloved influences). |
